Environmental Station Alpha is an action adventure platformer with a retro aesthetic and heavy emphasis on exploration. In the game the player controls a robot sent to investigate a mysterious, abandoned space station with the mission to find out what exactly took place there. The game has been in the works for nearly 3 years.
In early 2011 I made some concept art for an exploration platformer set in space, something that I had dreamed of making for a very long time. The concept art pieces showed some promise in a very low-resolution, limited-palette design, and thus I decided to make a game out of them. Development started at the end of 2011, and after that I've steadily (or occasionally less steadily) worked on the game with the idea that it might be my first commercial game. Early into the development I invited my friend Roope Makinen, with whom I've worked in the past, to compose music for the game; he's a very skilled person and the theme song of the game heard in the 2012 trailer has got a lot of praise. Since the game's development process was very freeform there were no definite deadlines, but in the beginning of 2014 the game was close to enough to completion to aim for a release. I got in contact with Joonas Turner and he agreed to create the sound effects for the game along with his colleague Niilo Takalainen. The results were fantastic - Joonas has worked on several great indie titles such as The Swapper and Nuclear Throne.
- A large interconnected space station to explore.
- Over 10 powerups to find and use.
- Over 15 bosses to beat
- Really nice music and SFX
- Tons of secrets and little hidden things
- BEEP BOOP RETRO GRAPHICS
